Associate Actuary

Price life insurance policies taking into account mortality, interest, and expenses. Make sure that the values meet state regulations. Prepare company financial statements. Access various electronic files/databases to gather information for financial statements. Use modelling software to project profitability of blocks of business under various future scenarios. I enjoy learning about new software and using it to model products.

There are entry level positions - actuarial student then actuarial analyst.

What education or training did you have to prepare for this career?

Math major. Learned FORTRAN & APL. Various Microsoft programs: WORD, EXCEL, ACCESS.

What education or training do you recommend for students today who want to enter this field?

Math/actuarial with some training in economics.

When you were in high school, did you know that you would enter this field?

No idea - thought I?d be a teacher.
