What education or training do you recommend for students today who want to enter this field?
Obtaining a license to teach in the state of Massachusetts has a variety of possible routes. The easiest way is to enter college with a subject matter in mind as your major, and take the required (about 5) courses to obtain the initial license. Once you have taught for 5 years and earn a master?s degree you will have your professional license and will then need to keep up with professional development. With a previously earned bachelor?s degree you can take the state test and teach on a preliminary license until you fulfill the state requirements for teaching long term.
When you were in high school, did you know that you would enter this field?
No - I always knew that I wanted to do something with mathematics, but I thought I was going to be a civil engineer or an architect. I never thought I would be a teacher!
